Reflection Statement:
To me, the second InTASC Standard means that I, as the teacher, understand individual differences and the different cultures and communities students may come from. I also understand how important it is to set high standards for each student. This standard shows that it is important for students to be included in the general education classroom and how important it is for the teacher to design and adapt his or her instruction to meet each student’s diverse learning strengths and needs. This standard shows how important it is for the me to understand that each student learns differently and that it is important for the teacher to attend to the needs and expand the strengths of the student.
The artifact that I selected for the second InTASC Model Core Teaching Standard is a Process Paper that was written over the achievement gap in a class I took called Multicultural Education. This course demonstrated how important it is to understand the issues that are going on in our society due to many different cultures and economic issues. The paper was written after research was done about the achievement gap. It discusses possible reasons why we have an achievement gap as well as possibly ways we can close the achievement gap. This paper also discusses how teachers get a lot of blame for the achievement gap but in reality they should not be the complete blame for the gap. This artifact was chosen for this standard because it shows the teachers understanding of differences and the different cultures and communities students come from.
I believe that this artifact is an appropriate representation of the second standard because it shows that the I understands that each student learns in different ways. I believe that this artifact is appropriate for this standard because shows different strategies that can be used in the classroom to help with students who may be struggling because of a disability they may have as well as strategies that can help with students who may not get the extra help they need at home because of the community they come from. Having these particular strategies helps the teacher understand how to change and adapt lessons as needed and to fit each individual student. One of the strategies that is discussed in the paper is how important it is for the teacher to really get to know his or her student and the background which that student comes from. Having the chance to really get to know the student gives the teacher understanding of how the student may learn or what the student enjoys so the teacher can connect those interests with the learner’s education.
This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because it shows that I understand each student is different. Each student learns differently, students differ in their communities and their background. Each individual student is an individual because of who they are and what has made them person they are today. This artifact shows that the teacher understands how important it is for the teacher to set high standards for each student no matter how difficult or how much they may have struggled in the past. I am someone who has an endorsement in special education and learning about learning disabilities and the achievement gap I have learned how important it is to adapt and change the material as needed to meet the student’s needs. This course that the paper was written for has taught me how important it is to understand that each human being is an individual but they each succeed in their own way. As a teacher, I have learned that I may need to change my lesson plans day to day or lesson to lesson but as long as it is meeting the student’s needs and that student or students is succeeding in my class then I am doing something right. Lastly, I have learned through this artifact and after truly understanding this standard, of how important it is to not only set high standards for my students but for my students to meet the high standards and expectations I have for them.
